To keep in mind

How to answer a coding question in an Interview?

  • Clarify the problem statement:

Before attempting to solve a problem, it is important to understand the problem clearly.Hence it is important to ask right questions.

  • Constraints:

If there is a clear understanding of the problem statement, the next step is to determine whether there are any specific constraints that must be followed.

  • Observations:

Every problem has a peculiar behaviour associated with it. So don't forget to tell the interviewer about all of the observations of that problem.

  • Approaches:

This is the most crucial part in the entire interview process. If you intend to solve the problem with a data structure, explain why you want to do so. If you're stuck, use the brute force method.

  • Discuss your approach:

When you've narrowed down your plan and believe you have a solution, talk to the interviewer about it. Accept if the interviewer proposes something new and begin thinking along those lines. Don't be too rigid in your thinking.

  • Edge Cases and counter examples:

If the solution for the problem is decided, make sure to test it for all possible edge-cases.

  • Writing the Code:

Make sure to check the following:

      a. The code should be readable and understandable.
      b. Add comments to your code.
      c. Before showing the code to the interviewer, dry run it with a few examples.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Companies typically give you the option of choosing your preferred programming language, in which case you can do so. If you list a language on your resume, your interviewer can ask you a question about it. As a result, keep that in mind! Make it clear on your resume if you aren't completely confident in a language. Put less-stronger languages under a heading like "Working Knowledge" or give them a star ranking.

  • It is ok to not know. The interview process mainly tests the thinking process/ logical ability rather than providing correct answers. If you are struck, ask your interviewer for help or hint. Don't give up!

  • Give a firm handshake after entering and greet the interviewers. Be friendly and respectful. Don't argue with the interviewer. Be confident and drive your own interview.

  • Wear neat and formal dress. Avoid using bright colours.
